What Age Does My Child Actually Need Braces? A Boynton Beach Orthodontist’s Honest Answer

Dr Eder in Boynton Beach talks to child patient about Orthodontics

By Dr. Jeff Eder, Eder Orthodontics (November 4, 2025)

A parent recently sat in my Boynton Beach office with her 7-year-old son, looking concerned. “Our dentist said Tommy needs braces right away. But he still has so many baby teeth. Does he really need treatment now?”

It’s a question I hear almost weekly. And my answer often surprises parents: “Sometimes no, but it is essential to see an Orthodontic Specialist to make sure.”

After nearly 30 years as an orthodontist in Boynton Beach, I’ve seen a troubling trend. More children are being pushed into early orthodontic treatment, sometimes called “Phase 1” or “interceptive treatment,” when the scientific evidence doesn’t always support it.

Let me be clear: I’m not opposed to early treatment when it’s truly necessary. But the keyword is necessary. And the truth is, sometimes it is necessary and sometimes it isn’t. So, it is important to see an Orthodontic Specialist at seven years of age or whenever you have a concern, just to make sure because there are often very simple things that can be done early that will save you a lot of time, money, and discomfort for your child.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Early Orthodontic Treatment

Here’s what many parents in Boynton Beach and Palm Beach County as a whole don’t realize: starting treatment too early can actually lead to:

  • Longer overall treatment time (yes, you read that right)
  • Higher total costs (paying for two phases instead of one)
  • Treatment fatigue in children who’ve been in braces for years
  • The need for re-treatment as adult teeth come in

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7 or when you have any concerns at all. That’s smart because it allows us to monitor development and catch true problems early. But an evaluation is very different from starting treatment.

When Early Treatment Actually Makes Sense

As a Boynton Beach orthodontist and past president of the South Florida Academy of Orthodontists, who’s treated thousands of patients, I can tell you there are legitimate situations where early intervention is crucial:

  1. Severe crossbites that affect jaw development
  2. Significant underbites caused by skeletal issues
  3. Impacted teeth that won’t erupt without help
  4. Severe crowding causing permanent tooth damage
  5. Habits like thumb-sucking affecting bite development beyond age 7-8

These situations represent maybe 10-15% of the children I see. The other 85-90% may be better served waiting until most or all permanent teeth have erupted, usually around age 11-13 for girls, 12-14 for boys.

With that said, it is essential to have this checked out by an orthodontic specialist because these are often overlooked and need early intervention because waiting when early intervention is required may result in more invasive and costly interventions sometimes resulting in compromised results.

Following the initial consultation, I will be able to advise what’s best for your child. I am very conservative and will only recommend early intervention treatment when absolutely necessary.

Why I Wait When Others Rush: The Evidence-Based Approach

My conservative approach to orthodontic treatment isn’t about being cautious, it’s about following the research. Study after study shows that single-phase treatment When early intervention isn’t required, typically produces:

  • Shorter treatment times (12-18 months versus 4-6 years for two-phase treatment)
  • More predictable results
  • Better long-term stability
  • Significantly lower costs

But here’s the honest part that makes some practices uncomfortable: early treatment is often more advantageous for orthodontic practices. Two phases of treatment mean two payments, more appointments, more years of care.

I didn’t open Eder Orthodontics to maximize revenue. I opened it to provide the treatment I’d want for my own family. That means only starting treatment when it’s the right time, not just because a patient walked through the door.

When Should You Bring Your Child to See an Orthodontist in Boynton Beach?

Here’s the straightforward answer: the American Association of Orthodontists recommends age 7, or whenever you have a concern as a parent. And I completely agree with this guidance.

I know that might sound contradictory after everything I just said about waiting for treatment. But here’s the critical distinction: an evaluation is not the same thing as starting treatment.

You’ve probably heard well-meaning advice like “wait until all the adult teeth come in” or “they’re too young to see an orthodontist.” That kind of thinking can actually be harmful. The truth is, there are situations where early intervention makes a significant difference in your child’s development, and you can’t know if your child is one of those cases without a proper orthodontic evaluation.

Why Age 7 or When You Have Concerns?

By age 7, enough permanent teeth have typically erupted that I can evaluate how your child’s bite is developing. Sometimes I see issues that need attention right away, like severe asymmetry in jaw growth, significant crossbites affecting development, or a mouth that’s too narrow for adult teeth to come in properly.

These situations benefit from what we call early intervention. But here’s what nearly 30 years of experience has taught me: these cases are the exception, not the rule.

When parents bring their child to me at age 7, one of three things typically happens:

  1. Everything looks great. I’ll tell you to enjoy watching those teeth come in, and we’ll see you back in a six months to a year as required to monitor development. No charge for monitoring visits.
  2. I see something worth watching. Maybe there’s mild crowding or a bite issue that might resolve on its own as they grow. I’ll explain exactly what I’m seeing, what to watch for at home, and when to come back. Again, no treatment needed yet.
  3. Early intervention is truly necessary. This are some situations where starting some form of treatment now will prevent bigger problems later or make future treatment shorter and more effective.

The key difference at Eder Orthodontics? I’m not going to push your child into treatment if they don’t need it. One of the biggest compliments I receive from parents in Boynton Beach and the greater Palm Beach County areas is that I don’t rush them into braces or Invisalign before it’s truly necessary. When I say it’s time to start treatment, you can trust that it genuinely is the right time and will benefit your child.

Trust Your Instincts as a Parent

If something about your child’s teeth or bite concerns you, don’t wait. Maybe you notice their jaw shifts to one side when they bite down. Maybe teeth are coming in at unusual angles. Maybe they’re having trouble chewing or their speech seems affected. These are all valid reasons to schedule an evaluation, regardless of your child’s age.

I’d rather see your child at age 6 and tell you everything is fine than have you wait until age 12 and discover we missed an opportunity to address something more easily years earlier.

What Makes Our Approach Different in Boynton Beach

When you bring your child to Eder Orthodontics for an evaluation, here’s what makes our process different from other orthodontic practices in Palm Beach County:

  • I personally examine every patient. Not an assistant, not a treatment coordinator, me. I’ve personally adjusted appliances for every single patient at every technical visit for over 29 years. This level of hands-on care means superior quality control and typically reduces treatment time by months.

  • I tell you the truth in terms of the right time to start orthodontic treatment. If your child doesn’t need treatment yet, I’ll tell you (e.g. there isn’t enough space in their mouth to commence treatment). We’ll monitor their development at no charge and let you know when the optimal time arrives. Some practices might see this as “lost revenue.” I see it as building trust with Boynton Beach families.

  • I use only the highest quality materials. When treatment is appropriate, I use top-tier braces made in America by American Orthodontics, not cheaper alternatives. I’m also a Platinum Plus Invisalign Provider for teens and adults who prefer clear aligners.

Questions to Ask Any Orthodontist in Boynton Beach

Whether you’re considering treatment with me or another orthodontist in Delray Beach, Lake Worth, or anywhere in South Palm Beach County, ask these questions:

  1. “Why does my child need treatment now versus waiting?” Listen for evidence-based answers, not fear-based ones.
  2. “What happens if we wait?” If the answer is vague warnings about things getting worse, get a second opinion.
  3. “Will the doctor personally do all the adjustments?” Many practices rely heavily on assistants. You deserve to know who’s actually treating your child.
  4. “What does research show about early treatment for this specific issue?” A good orthodontist should reference evidence, not just opinion.
  5. “How many phases of treatment do you anticipate?” Understand the total time and cost commitment upfront.

The Right Time Is Different for Every Child

I’ve been practicing orthodontics in Boynton Beach since 1998, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: cookie-cutter timelines don’t work. Every child develops
differently. Every bite issue has unique factors. Every family has different needs and concerns.

That’s why I spend 30 minutes with every new patient, doing a thorough examination and explaining exactly what I see. I’ll tell you if treatment is needed now, later, or possibly never. No pressure, no sales tactics, just honest professional guidance from one of the most experienced orthodontists in South Palm Beach County.

If treatment is recommended, we’ll show you what to expect: how long treatment will take, what it will cost, and what results we’re aiming for. And if you’re ready to begin, my team can often start treatment the same day.

A Personal Note to Boynton Beach Parents

Dr. Eder - leading orthodontist Boynton Beach

As a father myself, I understand the instinct to act immediately when someone suggests your child needs treatment. But sometimes the best action is patience.

If another dentist or orthodontist has recommended early treatment, I encourage you to get a second opinion. Not necessarily from me (although I’m happy to provide one), but from an orthodontist who follows evidence-based practices and has your child’s best interests at heart.

Your child may need braces at some point. But wearing them at the RIGHT time makes all the difference in treatment length, results, and their overall experience.
